Three questions sort it out. Do you want to watch the dolphins or get in the water? Are you already in Akaroa, or coming from Christchurch for the day? And do you need a refund if your plans change?

Before you book

Wild dolphins, no promises.

Akaroa Harbour is the flooded crater of a volcano that last erupted millions of years ago, open to the Pacific at one end. Hector's dolphins feed in it from spring to autumn, and every cruise heads out towards the heads, past fur seals on the rocks, white-flippered penguins and the sea caves under the cliffs of the marine reserve.

The part nobody can sell you is the dolphins. They are wild and endangered, and the rules are strict: boats may not chase them, and swimmers may only get in the water near a pod with no young calves. Most cruises see them. When they do not, Black Cat gives a free re-cruise, not a refund, and a missed swim earns a free nature cruise instead. Book Akaroa early in your trip, and keep a spare day.

Metres, about the longest a Hector's dolphin grows, according to DOC: the smallest marine dolphin in the world, found only in New Zealand. Look for the rounded black dorsal fin.

01

Watch or swim?

Watching suits everyone and runs all year. The swim is October to April, ages 8 and up, and cold.

02

When are dolphins likeliest?

Summer, when they gather inside the harbour. In winter many move offshore.

03

No dolphins?

No refunds anywhere. Black Cat gives a free re-cruise voucher; check each operator's rule.

04

Who should skip the swim?

Anyone who cannot swim 50 metres in open sea, or hates cold water: the cruise sees the same dolphins.

Your day

How an Akaroa day runs

From Christchurch it is a long day: about 90 minutes each way, two hours on the water, and lunch in town.

01

Over the Hilltop

State Highway 75 runs past Lake Ellesmere and Little River, then climbs to the crater rim, where the harbour opens up below you.

03

On the water

Check in on Beach Road, then two hours out to the heads: cliffs, caves, seals, penguins and, most days, dolphins.

Akaroa itself

Fish and chips on the waterfront, the 1880 lighthouse, the French street names, then the drive home.

  • May to September: cruises still run (Black Cat at 10:45 am and 1:30 pm, Akaroa Dolphins at 12:45 pm), with fewer dolphins inside the harbour.
  • Cruise-ship days: mostly November to March. The town and the boats fill fast.

  • Dolphin swim: 8 and over, with an adult swimmer in the water for ages 8 to 12.
  • Swimmers must manage 50 metres unaided in deep open sea; no life jackets.
  • Sea kayaking: 10 and over with an adult; moderate fitness.
  • A warm layer and a windproof jacket: it is cooler out at the heads than in town.

Black Cat: 61 Beach Road · Akaroa Dolphins: 65 Beach Road · Fox II: Daly's Wharf

Akaroa's old Main Wharf is closed while the council rebuilds it, with completion planned for 2027. The cruises moved along Beach Road: Black Cat checks you in at its office at number 61, Akaroa Dolphins at number 65 with boarding at Drummonds Jetty and its new floating pontoon. Parking in the village is tight in summer, so arrive 30 minutes early.

Around your trip

Everything else worth knowing

Timing, what guests wish they had known, cruise-ship days and the fine print.

  • January to March: the most dolphins in the harbour and the warmest water. Our pick for the swim.
  • November and December: long days and green hills; swim water still around 14 to 17°C.
  • Winter: calm, quiet and cheap to stay. Cruises run; expect fewer dolphins and colder wind at the heads.
  • Morning departures: the harbour is often calmer before the afternoon sea breeze picks up.
  • Driving yourself? Take the Summit Road along the crater rim on one leg of the trip, for the views.
  • Sit outside on the cruise if you can. The dolphins ride the bow and the wake, not the windows.
  • A day trip that "includes Akaroa" may not include the cruise. Read the inclusions first.
  • Eat early on summer evenings: Akaroa is small, and kitchens close sooner than in the city.
  • Book the Pōhatu penguin evening tour direct with the farm; it is not sold on Viator.
  • Akaroa is a tender port: the ship anchors in the harbour and boats ferry passengers to the town.
  • Ship days fill the cruises and cafés. Book your boat ahead and avoid the first tender rush.
  • Most big ships now berth at Lyttelton, but Akaroa still hosts calls through summer.
  • Check the day on CruiseMapper, or read our cruise-ship days post.
  • Most tours here cancel free up to 24 hours before.
  • The swim day trip and the Christchurch shore excursion need 6 days for a full refund; the kayak tours are non-refundable.
  • Wind and swell at the heads can cancel a sailing. You then get a new date or a full refund.
  • The swim needs calm water. One guest on a stormy day was moved onto the nature cruise instead.

The guide

Akaroa and its dolphins, explained

Akaroa sells one thing above all: a couple of hours on a harbour with dolphins found nowhere else. The boats look alike in the photos. Here is how to tell them apart.

The dolphins

Hector's dolphins are tiny, about the size of a child, grey with a black face and a white belly, and the dorsal fin is round like a Mickey Mouse ear. They live only around New Zealand, and the survey estimate for the South Island is about 15,000. Set nets killed so many that in 1988 the government made Banks Peninsula New Zealand's first marine mammal sanctuary. They come into Akaroa Harbour mostly from spring to autumn, and they are curious: they ride the bow wave and play in the wake.

That curiosity is the whole swim business. The boat stops near a pod and the swimmers slip in and wait. The dolphins decide whether to come over. Nobody touches them, nobody feeds them, and by law a boat cannot put swimmers near a pod with young calves.

Snorkellers in black wetsuits floating at the surface with a Hector's dolphin nearby

Swim or watch?

The swim costs about twice the cruise, runs only from October to April and asks a lot: a 5 mm wetsuit, water around 12 to 19°C, open sea 15 to 30 metres deep, and the stamina to swim 50 metres back to the ladder. On a good day the dolphins circle within arm's length. On a slow one you get in once, briefly. If you are not a confident swimmer, or you have small children, the nature cruise sees the same animals from a dry deck, and it runs all year.

The honest small print: nobody refunds you for missing the dolphins. Black Cat gives a free re-cruise voucher on its nature cruise, and a no-show on the swim earns you a nature cruise instead. A voucher only helps if you are still in the area, so book Akaroa early in your trip. Each of our tour pages says what happens on a quiet day.

Black Cat or Akaroa Dolphins?

Black Cat has run Akaroa's wildlife cruises the longest, on a big catamaran with up to three sailings a day and the re-cruise promise. Akaroa Dolphins is a family business whose family goes back eight generations in Akaroa: a smaller boat, a drink of local wine or beer, home baking and a dog that spots dolphins from the bow. Its 5.0 rating from 2,290 reviews is the best in town. For sails instead of engines, Fox II is a 1922 kauri ketch that cuts the motor once it is out of the harbour. The side-by-side comparison goes boat by boat.

The road over the Hilltop drops straight into the old crater.

From Christchurch for the day

Akaroa is about 84 km from Christchurch, around 90 minutes each way on a road that climbs and twists over the crater rim. Drive yourself and you set the pace; take a tour and someone else handles the bends. The catch is in the inclusions. Some day tours include a harbour cruise, some offer it as an extra, and some just give you free time in town. Our day trip guide sorts out which is which, and cruise passengers should read the shore excursion guide first.

FAQ

Questions before you book

Straight answers to what people ask most about Akaroa tours and its dolphins.

Can you swim with dolphins in Akaroa?

Yes, from October to April, with a permitted operator and only when the dolphins choose to come close. Black Cat runs the swim from Akaroa (NZ$250 for adults in 2026, wetsuit included), and a coach day trip from Christchurch packages it from $224. Nobody guarantees a swim. Details in the dolphin swim guide.

Are dolphins guaranteed on an Akaroa harbour cruise?

No: they are wild. Sightings are very likely, and Black Cat says it sees them on about 98% of trips. If you see none on a Black Cat nature cruise, you get a free voucher to go again, not your money back. Plan a spare day if the dolphins are the reason you came.

How much does an Akaroa dolphin cruise cost?

On Viator, from $76 per person for the Black Cat cruise and $81 for Akaroa Dolphins, for two hours. Booked direct in 2026, Black Cat charges NZ$130 per adult and Akaroa Dolphins NZ$140. Our price guide sets every option side by side.

Black Cat or Akaroa Dolphins: which cruise is better?

Both last two hours and see the same wildlife. Akaroa Dolphins is smaller (up to 35 guests), pours a glass of local wine and brings a dolphin-spotting dog. Black Cat is bigger, sails more often and gives a free re-cruise if you miss the dolphins. Compared in full in Black Cat vs Akaroa Dolphins.

How far is Akaroa from Christchurch?

About 84 km by road, which takes around 1 hour 30 minutes on State Highway 75 through Little River and over the Hilltop, where the road winds down into the crater. Allow longer with stops. See the Christchurch day trip guide.

Is an Akaroa day trip from Christchurch worth it?

Yes, if you leave early. You get the drive over the crater rim, cheese at Barrys Bay, a two-hour harbour cruise and an hour or two in town. Check whether your tour includes the cruise: many day tours only drive you there.

How cold is the water for the dolphin swim?

Cold. The sea around Akaroa averages about 12 to 14°C in October and November and 16 to 19°C in January and February. The operators lend you a 5 mm wetsuit, and you will still feel the first minute.

What is the minimum age to swim with dolphins in Akaroa?

Eight. Children aged 8 to 12 must have an adult swimmer with them in the water, and swimmers must manage 50 metres unaided in open sea. On the harbour cruises, babies and toddlers are welcome. See Akaroa with kids.

Where do Akaroa cruises leave from in 2026?

Not the Main Wharf: it is being rebuilt until about 2027. Black Cat checks in at 61 Beach Road, Akaroa Dolphins at 65 Beach Road with boarding at Drummonds Jetty, and Fox II sails from Daly's Wharf. The wharf post has the details.

What are the best Akaroa shore excursions for cruise passengers?

Stay in Akaroa. A harbour nature cruise, a guided kayak or a short farm tour fits easily between tenders. A trip to Christchurch spends about three hours of the day on the coach. Read Akaroa shore excursions before you book.

Can I cancel an Akaroa tour?

Most tours here cancel free up to 24 hours before. The swim day trip and the shore excursion to Christchurch need six days for a full refund, and the sea kayak tours are non-refundable. If the operator cancels for weather, you get a new date or a full refund.
